Michael Phelps’ Last Olympics

Michael Phelps has been a true legend in the world of competitive swimming for many years now. Ever since he started his career in swimming about two decades ago, this American swimmer has shown an immense amount of promise. In about eight years, he started to reach heights that not many had reached before him. Not many would have even thought it possible, before Phelps showed them that it was indeed. It can truthfully be claimed that Phelps has indeed been much ahead of any competition for the last twelve years now.

The man himself is perhaps his only competition At least; his medals and accolades say just that. The number of Olympic Medals he has earned is no less than a whopping twenty two. If that wasn’t enough to stun the world, eighteen of those twenty two are golds. This just goes to show how far ahead he is in his own field. In fact, his medals have often been a much discussed matter in the sports world. And why wouldn’t they be? The man has earned more medals in the Olympics than several countries put together.

It will surprise many to hear that Michael Phelps has only participated in 24 among the total of forty six Olympic events in swimming held in the years of his career. Among them, he has won medals in twenty two. Only four of these medals are not gold. It is often a good joke for many to compare his medal count not with other athletes, but entire countries. Even then, there would be few countries that would beat this phenomenal swimmer.

It is truly said that no competitor of his has come close to him yet. The next highest gold-medal winners are all have nine, which is literally half of Phelps’.  Even in the London Olympics, his dream run has continued. There is no doubt that Michael Phelps has broken many a sports lovers’ hearts when he said that this is going to be his last Olympic game. He is in fact saying goodbye to the world of competitive swimming.  Though there is no doubt about the fact that he has said his farewell with much élan and style; it cannot be denied that not many would want to say good bye to him yet. After all, the man is nothing short of a legend.

In his last speech as an Olympic competitor, Phelps said that he is completely happy with what he has achieved till date. From his debut 12 years ago to the London Olympics, 2012, the journey has been most satisfying for him. It goes without saying, that his journey was as spectacular to all who had the joy of watching it, as it was to him.
